Some synthetic oils are designed for a particular model of car. Some experts do point out that there are some problems with using modern, synthetic oils in older engines. The details are back in the office!

In fairness, I don't think anyone was advocating the use of modern 0W30 viscosity oils in old engines. You can get higher viscosity synthetics and I think they'd be essential because of the huge bearing clearances that ancient engine designs used to have. Also, I think that the oil leaks tend to happen when people put the very low viscosity stuff in old engines simply because the seals were never designed to cope with oil that thin.

I'm more worried about whatever additives (or lack of them) might go into a synthetic oil. I'm also not sure how well synthetic oils work at the much lower temperatures that you'd often get in a classc car engine.
