One for the PC gurus .
picked up a disc at a car boot locally - nice set of stuff on it ,but AVG 8 reports "AUTOIT.CPT " infection .
What do I do - bin it -or trust it - AVG deletes Launcher

Thats the origonal idea that I had, but AVG and Norton/Symantec sites don't list this -can't find this listed anywhere -not even doing a search on the name of file extension
.Seems that someone has written this in AutoHotkey and that's possibly the problem -thought someone might recognise the extension as proper to a piece of software .
(BTW-more of a market than carboot -policed by anti fraud blokes )

AutoIt is a scripting language (like a batch file or VBS file) that is popular in situations where you need to control another program as it has the ability to do things like click specific buttons in a window or read text from that window and act on it's input.

Like any scripting language (or indeed any programming language), it can be used for both legitimate and malicious purposes.

Some antiviruses go bonkers merely at the presence of an AutoIt script, though this should be mostly by sorted by now. Is your AVG completely up to date?

Another of my lines of thought -wondering if AVG once updated saw something it thought was a virus .No reaction to file when first scanned or later ,till update .Disc is read only -so it couldn't be put on later .Only other thought is that it could br something dormant on the disc,hence the post .Anyway whatever the file contains ,AVG has and is blocking it running .Suspect looking at the readme's it was put on as a modern version of the old DOS program "choice"( circa DOS 6/6.22) -to let non experienced user run certain on the disc ,as each prog has it's own setup.exe -only prob I had was whether this could be malicious --suspect it's not -but gone down the road of copying the other files to another disc and that disc scans ok for AV and spyware ,and runs .+
