Can someone explain why the HA deem it necessary to hang a sign on each of the new matrix signs on the M5 saying...'sign not in use'.

I can only presume its preparing us for when the signs are in use and state 'heavy rain'!

I think that's about it. Normally you need to look at a sign to determine if it's raining or if there's spray about. The ones on the M60 are very useful when they say 'Spray - slow down' as there's no way I'd be able to tell otherwise. If it's blank it means it's not raining, so by putting 'sign not in use', it's basically advising you to be extra wary as there is no way of telling whether it's raining or not.

Those "not in use" signs are actually important.

Suppose one matrix sign is actually displaying an important message such as Accident ahead, lane 3 closed.

Then you reach the next (new) matrix sign and it is blank, you assume that the accident has now been cleared and for once they actually remembered to switch the sign off so people revert back to their usual inattentive driving style and plough straight into the back of the accident.

Well that's what I thought the reason was anyway.

Being really pedantic, surely the fact that it is displaying a message even 'sign not in use' must mean that it is in use ???

This thread reminds me of the time I was doing my daily commute along the M8 one particularly foggy morning. I was (carefully) approaching the section with overhead matrix signs and I squinted to see what the blurry message was through the restricted visibility.

As I got closer I read the word...

FOG

The ones that I have seen have been a white sticker posted onto the sign rather than the electronic sign itseft.

The sign I saw was black writing on a yellow background, and tied to the pole.

I was on about the signs that are hung on the signs!!!

So they need a sign to hang on the signs hung from the signs to tell you that the sign telling you that the sign is not in use is in use as it refers to the original sign not the sign hung on it.

(It made sence to me! )

Strange really, as they are not prescried signs, but 7072 sais exactally what they need...

Sorry for the confusion, I saw a matrix sign near the M11/M25 Junction with the message on the matrix sign rather than a tied on sign. Sorry !

a good friend of mine put a sign up in a field he owned.

it stated: 'DO NOT DEFACE THIS SIGN'

Apparently no one ever did.

we've lost touch but........i wonder if he now works for the HA?
