Dunwoody fights to remain in post

Labour backbencher Gwyneth Dunwoody is fighting to remain chair of the Commons transport select committee despite a two-term limit on holding the post.

She told the Times that she would fight party whips who "would like someone who could be manoeuvred" as the new chair.

Ms Dunwoody believes because it was a sub-committee for her first two years, the two-term rule does not apply.

A party leadership bid to oust her from the post in 2001 failed when over 100 Labour MPs rebelled against the move.

Ms Dunwoody told the Times on Thursday: "They would like to get rid of me any way they can. The basic problem for them is they would like someone who could be manoeuvred.

"The chairmanships are now just regarded as part of the government's patronage."

She added: "The chief whip has even asked me who I thought should replace me and I suggested four people, but each one was pushed out immediately.

"It is very clear to me what is going on and I am fighting for my chairmanship."
===================================
Having listened to her opinions on road safety, I'm very happy indeed to dub her 'dangerous' Dunwoody.

I suspect the "two term" limit is to reduce the likelyhood of vested interests, corruption etc.

I wonder how many "business" (including Universities)now get a significant income through this comittee. A change of face may result in a review of policy regarding payed advisers, research grants etc.
