I think the key word is Knowing you could/ are going to run out of fuel.

I could have been in a similar situation on my last trip to Germany. I had enough fuel in my tank to get from Birmingham to my parents easily. However I hit the mother of traffic jams on the Antwerp ring road. A car had broken down. Believe it or not I checked my trip computer at the start, it read ~120 miles. Then as the traffic jam proceeded ~50 miles, Luckily I was able to get to the first filling station. If I had run out of fuel it would not have been incompetence, as I have made this journey several times on one tank of petrol, it would have been bad luck.

That was a good episode, Tone. Now listen up. Some of these folk around here have thin skins. I don’t want all the arguing and backbiting that those guys are starting up.

But it must be said – you don’t run out of petrol on the m-way! It’s a really bad idea and I’m not surprised it’s against the law. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, and that’s that.

I know. If only we could somehow persuade those people to act well, but it's futile - you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, eh?

I had a fuel guage on my VFR VTEC, and it was pretty darned accurate too. That was a great bike in so many ways.

I’ve got one on mine, not sure if it’s the same bike as tone’s.

Whatever, happened to the good ole' days when all bikes had a reserve tap? A good mechanical one you reached down by your left leg and turned. It was good and faultless.

Okay so it spluttered for a few seconds but it never left you flagging in L3 of the M5. Had an interesting moment trying to get across a junction once

Tried never to rely on reserve after that.

BTW. My bike? KLV1000 (Same as VSTROM) Suits me cuz I got legs longer than a giraffe's neck.

I was trolled by a bad man on another thread for saying this, but assumption is the mother of all screw-ups. Is it bad luck to assume that, because you make a journey several times on one tank, you can always make the journey? At what point does it become negligence?
