So what are you saying? That because he was a millionaire in a millionare's car, he should be allowed to park wherever he wants?

The "crowd" whooping and clapping is admittedly despicable, but he doesn't deserve to be let off (or murder the traffic warden as the previous poster seems to advocate) simply because he is wealthy.

As I've mentioned on another thread, my father in law drove fire engines (the simon snorkel ladder) and if cars were parked illegally and blocked his way to an emergency he would "nudge" them out of the way. The Veyron driver is lucky, I suppose, that he gets a fine of 0.000075% of the value of the car, rather than a fire-engine shaped dent in the car.

Yes, it's unfortunate that the envy of the crowd got the better of them.

I don't know if this particular bit of parking was actually obstructing anything but, if so, then the driver was an idiot just like the driver of, say, a Micra would be.

Maybe the crowd were local residents who were sick of him parking to the inconvenience of residents?

I wonder if there is a history of him blocking people in, parking on pavements, etc?

Its not that hard to work out why they reacted like that. A lot of people believe that posh folks with big expensive cars seldom get any come-uppance for bad behaviour on the roads and here was one - the ultimate persona of the uber-BMW driver - getting a slap right in front of their eyes.

Well, to be honest MGBGT, you only got the same kind of distorted slant analysis of your post that others receive on theirs.
I mean, heaven forbid if someone comes along and sugeests we all stick to the speed limit

The fine could be upgraded so that it hurts him as much as a $60 fine would hurt a pensioner. Perhaps a £6,000 fine would have a similar deterrent effect.

That way, we'd have no envy for the poor(er) man, but we'd all pay a little less tax? There's no downside, as far as I can see.

Except for the destruction of the concept of all men being equal under the law.

I am totally against punishments being related to the wealth of the offender rather than the seriousness of the offence. I am even concerned with the principle of time limitation of offences being undermined because a prisoner happened to win the lottery.

But in order to make all men equal under the law, the punishment would have to be related to the dosh the perp has, wouldn't it? Without that, there is a disproportionately unequal deterrent levied against poor offenders, and we don't want to be regressive. You seem to be "hoist by your own petard", eh malc? How do you get around that , then?

Simple!

You do a similar thing with prison sentences. When a very rich person gets convicted of, say, murder, he gets a prison sentence of one minute. Some scumbag burglar who sponges and steals from society and contributes nothing to the world gets a million years.

Dusty, your right again, chum... I'd love to be the one who delivers the lashes to that mug in the Bugatti. I'd give him 40 - 20 for bad parking, and 20 for his vanity. It'd wipe the smile off his face. There's quite a lot to be said for some aspects of "sharia law", as they call it out east.
