Hi Guys

Pulled away from some lights this evening - not particularly hard, and relaxed off the juice, momentarily I may possibly have been over the limit, I drove 100m down the road to see that I'd been driving towards two policemen stood on the road with a Hand Held laser. I thought that in this situation that the police would call you in and stop you to issue the ticket, but one of the guys was scribbling as we drove past. The laser clearly had to camera (just the battery unit on the bonnet) - can the Police issue a Speeding ticket without stopping you at the roadside?

Thanks ever so much for your help

KRgds

by the way - it was dark and wet - but not raining.

Maybe they just couldn't get a fix on my car?

Go have a look at www.pepipoo.com 2 officers don't even need a camera - their opinion is evidence enough if they both agree.

You'll have to wait 14 days if you're the registered keeper of the vehicle. If you don't receive anything within that time you're ok.

Typically the cops will stop you at the roadside for a chat. The effects of that chat will do far more for road safety than fining you through the post ever will. Cops know that and that's why they do it.

There can be circumstances where they deem it inappropriate to stop you at the time and that's when they might decide to send you out a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) to the RK and pursue it that way.

Thanks again for your responses - Do they do this very often then?, I mean it was a 40 limit Dual Carriageway, plenty of room to pull me in for a chat.

I'd be pretty surprised if you received a NIP, but it's not impossible. Are you certain they were cops not (and I hesitate to say it for fear of igniting another flame war which is best left in its own thread) PCSOs or civvies?

quite a funny situation actually, they had parked in the drive to a 4x4 garage which I usually look at as i drive past, hence I am in the inside lane chilling out.

This evening I found myself needing to overtake to pull in for my usual viewing - hence the momentary speed......

.....I was coming past the dealer - chilling, nice range rover, cayenne, rangerover, x5.... that one has a funny paint job.... bugger it's a police car and there's the boys in blue!!!!

They had a shogun - parked on a 4wd car garage forecourt.... I mean that's slick!!!

Lights to dealer 200m, probably moved quickly for 100m whilst getting sorted to chill and view, and then noticed the funny coloured car for sale @ 50m away. Car has Xenons making it hard to target, weather poor, darted around a bit, i mean this one seems 50:50, although the police left the site 10 mins later, maybe they were struggling?

Oh I hate these dramas!

How far above limit were you.. in your opinion? 10% + 2/3/4? ( high margin more over and you could be in some bother.. Depends on the force but usually (unless hot spots like Wales and Lancs...) - we usually give a fair enough "margin" - but I will not say what Durham's actual margin is as this would not be a proper thing to do  We think it fair.. those copped by us.. few disagree    but some do

You say one was taking notes? They may have been auditing the situation following "complaints."

Guess you will have to wait 14 days. I do agree though - more settling to be pulled on the spot than wait and see. Here - we normally have the words and attempt to educate.

Thanks for your response In Gear.

I agree with your comments, the car is a 0-60 in 3.8seconds job, it takes great care as it can achieve very high speeds very fast. I also considder it a great responsibility to have and use one - hence the clean license!!

In this situation vis was great and the road ahead of the cars being overtaken completely clear, with no road junctions etc. I used a small amount of the force to safely pass and with room pull in infront of the overtaken cars. As for how that force translated to speed - when I took my eyes off the road to glance at the speedo it was rolling back down through your margin, and possibly I'm over-reacting! - I'm quite precious about my license nowardays. It may have been an audit as the next day more speed checks were being performed with people being pulled over.

I'd much rather have it done.... a chat at the roadside makes much more sense.

We'll wait and see - 8 days to go!
