From your posting in the Worst Rule In The Highway Code thread...

 Try again.

Ummm, are you now denying you said that?

Not at all - but it certainly DOESN'T say anything similar to your claim that I said "headlights don't make us visible".

"Headlights don't work, headlights don't make us visible..."

OK, whatever...

Tell me blademansw, why did you say 'As to FJSrider and main beam, I was being a devils advocate there to see if anyone bit'?

The person who actually 'bit' was Sixy_the_red as they thought your statement was 'true'.

Don't drag me back into this! And its 'she', not 'they'

when you ride a bike with a geniune exhaust that has passed all the type approval tests at say 30 or 40mph the most by-standers hear is gears whining and the chain.

The trouble is that a lot of bikes that get ridden "enthusiasticaly" have loud pipes. This intern gets heard by Mr and Mrs Daily Express-Readers who then assume that Mr GSXR-Rider is speeding and therefore a shiney new camera is required ASAP. Obviousy they (The Daily Express-Readers) are semi retired and have all the time in the world to pester the local SCP into suppilying the shiney new Gatso.

As I write there are cars driving past my house and most of them I will wager are driving faster than the 30mph they should be. All I can hear is their tyres wooshing past and that's fine with me. But there are several knob heads (not out tonight thought) on bikes that think the whole place is an ideal venue to rev their sports bikes hard in first gear and then hook the next five gears at a similar rate of acceleration. But even if you're out in the country people can hear your noisey piped bike screaming for miles and don't wish to so they complain and it just leads to cameras and anti bike measures.

Stop press.... a properly silenced bike just rode past and I had to strain to hear it. Lovely

The more people that take something up, the more it becomes acceptable. Take for instance the eye level brake lights in the back window of cars. banned now but were thought to be a safety feature.

A book I have from the 1940's on motorcycle maintenence and road craft says, If you ride at night or in fog on rural roads with your headlights on, you are likely to get a ticking off from lorry drivers. turn them off to see better. A little known rule for passing oncoming vehicles on single track roads is to turn off your lights while negotiating each other on partcularly tight lanes, so you can both see without being blinded.

everyone drives at night with lights on and yes it is safer, if only to give you an idea of what is coming the other way. you're still better off with no front light in fog and likely to get other road users irate if you keep rear fog lights on once they've caught up.

coming out of a sunset or driving on pilot light while the vehicle behind is on head lights, makes you invisible. that's a fact. look for the almost invisible car with side lights on among all those on full.

louder pipes are safer. modern road surfaces and very quiet vehicles have caused a jump in pedestrian road casualties. That doesn't mean you have to be obnoxious and make everyone for a 1/4 mile aware of your existence.

Proper performance (illegal for road use) pipes DO have a benefit to performance or they wouldn't use them in professional racing. I know some pipe manufacturers are deliberatley making cans that are too loud to legally use on the road but have no performance benefit. There's a market out there and they're exploiting it.

If you don't like loud pipes, don't fit them.
If you feel safer with lights on in day time, put your lights on.
if you fit illegal pipes, expect the law to have a word and issue a ticket, fine and retest. you know the risks, it's up you.
Let's try to get back to a time when bikers had a bit more of a "live and let live" attitude. in house squabbles does nothing to further any causes we may be involved in.
