The Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish for a start.

Anyway, I flew the Italian flag on my house and it earned me nothing but (grudging) respect from my neighbours!

When I'm in work on my travels I find them chavvy,

Could it be possible that the 'camp' and 'sissy' manner of some male homosexuals, comes as naturally to them as does the 'butch' and 'manly' manner comes to some male heterosexuals?

I don't think anyone purposely adopts a way of acting to fit a stereotype of their sexuality, behaviour is definately more a matter of nature and nurture than an active choice to fall into either one extreme category of behaviour or another, in an act of 'flippantness'.

Ach! Ist just that sometimes they seem to adopt the style of those they see on TV.. you know - Graham, Dale, etc. But on the telly und radio - entertaining. Am more suspicious actually at an overtly butch "caricature"

Same as a lesbian does not always have too short hair und try to be blokey und butch. ..

Some - you would never guess as they like to keep discretion.

.Wimmin are wimmin und will always try to preen to make best of appearance just like a male.... all have one thing in common .. "strutting their stuff to attract a mate"

But with some.. ( a great many) - it sometimes comes across as a sort of "learned behaviour" as if this ist how they are expected to look und behave... :?

Well - I am foreign und cannot spell two little words properly despite entire internet trying to educate me :hehe: - besides my family. My English teacher gave up..  eventually  Am a "lost cause" as far as spelling in English ist concerned....

Anyway... no matter.

I celebrate St Nickolaus Day on 6 December each year. Our children sing us a song, recite a poem or play something on musical instrument und get a little present for this entertainment. Ist part of Appenzeller tradition und each Kanton/department across German speaking countries in particular have regional differences like their regional dialects und are very proud to continue them. 8-)

Fasching? I do not go around the streets of Keswick in fancy dress beating the evil spirits out of the winter soil to ensure a good Spring und Summer where we sow the seeds und scatter to begin the next harvest.

But they do in German, Swiss und Austrian Fasching /Fasnacht .. und ist darned good custom too as ist major 8-) 8-) 8-) factor  Und each area has a different style too .. No two Fasching are alike und no European Christmas Market ist like another either

No.. I disagree with Oxfam over no decoration und "Winterval".
It came across as very much a patronising gesture in much the same way as referring to Christmas lights as "winter lights" - even though we fused Christmas with a pagan celebration of midwinter

True Brits would celebrate Michealmas Day too (as this was Olde Worlde UK version of Fasching but a right old knees up before "old winter song breaks in with his hard cold voice" I forget which poem I quote from .. perhaps someone can find the whole thing.. ist long forgotten poem but the line caught me as 14 year old. :?

You Brits would do Morris dancing like we do yodelling und dances in national costume.. we all have a Kantonal Tradiotional dress which identifies like Scottish tartan identifies clans.. Appenzeller ist a distinctively red waistcoat with black und white embroidery down th front.. black trousers for men und black und red Dirndl skirt for wimmin und we all have to wear a black hat or bonnet with red ribbons und pom poms.. und on election day the men carry their bayonets for the tourists  Ist a tradition for them to raise them in salute to the bride und groom with these bayonets too.. und the relatives did this when we christened our youngest two years ago in a local Lakeland church much to the amusement of the locals   (ist also tradition back home  )

But .. all foreigners like to have a bit of "home" when they become "ex pats" .. but ist one thing to hold a little bit of home und another to try to make the indigenous of a country abide und subject to the immigrant's way of life.

If you look closely though at the UK...

we have already aborbed und embraced some foreign stuff und ideas:

1. Language.. English ist a mish-mash of Celt, Latin, Anglo-Saxon (und Olde English nearly died with William the Conqueror as teh French of 1066 dominated for centuries. Bunch of rebels :hehe: (sound familiar  ) revived the language which emerged with a rich blend from these invasions. (source - excellent Melvyn Bragg research of English language und history - shown on ITV 2003 und should be repeated as a MUST VIEW or at least be released on DVD as was very interesting und informative .. und stunning photorgraphy of best of British towns und countryside  )

Apparently towns with "Thwaite" "Borough" und "Don" all have Viking past... und it seems we can identify original ancestry und founding of many towns by names .. "Chester/Caster" = Roman und other bastion of military dominance... Was most fascinating ....

2. Our food... saffron... spices.. from the Roman/Saxon merchant trade routes..

Curry? we embraced this from India/East along with some fashions..

Current tastes for Paella, Spanish omelette.. feta cheeses, pasta dishes .. holidays abroad..

What I do not like to see ist the current whim for Islamic followers (womenfolk) to dress head to foot as some of them do these days.

I do wear a scarf und cover my arms und will wrap a long skirt over my shorter skirts (if wearing one such on hols for example) if entering a Church. However, this does not occur often as I only enter a church if I am going to sit und pray in one - und I usually dress myself accordingly in decent taste - dress, trouser suit, or modest length skirt suit. Churches abroad may be ornate .. but they are places of worship und the locals use them more than here.

If I were ever to visit the Middle East.. I would wear a scarf on my head - und cover up arms/legs - probably wear trouser suit or long swirly skirt. This ist not necessarily out of "respect but more out of the necessity to protect my skin from the sun" - which along with the pork thing (shared by all faiths in that area) had more to do with the hot climate und perhaps then absorbed into culture - eventually becoming intertwined with the religion - in much the same way as our Catholic/Protestant need to show how much we revered our God by building grand churches filled with the finest works of art und gold.

I do not actually recall staunch followers of Islam from my youth in Switzerland und visits elsewhere in Europe including UK wearing such scary garments. as now... it was a pretty scarf matching a very tasteful outfit covering arms und legs.. more like a tunic style trouser suit und more blending with the West.

I suspect more a "fashion or desire to identify with a faith" rather than purist faith.. und the argument with Choudary (a zealot) und a young Asian business woman was most enlightening. Basically he would not let either her or Vine get a word in edgeways. - a pure unreasoned rant in which he complained of being "constantly interrupted" und any listnre to that prog last Tuesday would confirm not so - und it did him no favours.... und the young lady when told she was a sinful und fallen woman for just wearing a scarf... told Choudary to "get a life mate!" 8-) 8-)

I think a little more returns to values pre 2001 would help get a grip.. as I have only really seen this trend to very traditional dress since then - or at least up here in the North.

I do think that current war und threats of war ist feeding this trend und desire to "express the culture all the more" ist a part of our current problems und now festering "intolerances" on each side of the coin

You seem to be rubbing it in - pointing out that you are free to fly the Italian flag, while (in Hampshire at least) the English flag is banned, out of "fear that St George's Crosses on the engines could upset some communities" Banning them upsets me - dont I count?
Meanwhile FSJrider seems to feel that the flags should be banned because HE dislikes football - presumably that includes your Italian flag, if that is why you were flying it. :(

As a britton, I have to wear a crash helmet on a motorcycle. I have to refrain from making remarks about non-British races or religions even in jest, I cannot have a piggy bank on my window ledge if there are muslims in my neighbourhood. However, other religions and races are exempt from these same laws, and are free to offend me in all manner of ways without any fear of being prosecuted.
Is it any wonder that it is so easy to find otherwise respectable members of the public, who will make racist remarks. It's done out of spite! :(

Do you regard yourself as Italian, or British I wonder?

This thread started out interesting but has become so far off topic that it should be either moved or locked so as to stop wasting people time who are looking to read about "Speed, Safety, Driving and the Law".

Sorry but I'm simply sick of the entire thread.

Flags are not banned in Hampshire. Flying flags from fire appliances apparently is/was. Why do you have a problem with that? Would you have them rushing to a shout with Southampton scarves fluttering from the back? What about some pendants and plastic football boots hanging from the mirror?
Ernest Marsh wrote:

Here we have intentional(?) misrepresentation of what I wrote again. I don't care if chav flags are banned or not and I certainly DID NOT say they should be, but I can understand, and approve of, why fire appliances were told not to have them.

Rubbish. The stupidity of the argument from some of the 'outraged' empire loyalists is just astonishing. It really weakens any of the good points you might have in your position as you just look ridiculous making facile comments like that.

Are you retarded? That link does NOT show that piggy banks cannot be put on window ledges.

Anyway it appears that the story is not true either. But you won't let that alter your pathetic blinkered views.

You do your point of view(s) no good by having this agressive, confrontational attitude to everyone that doesn't share your opinion.

That is not an 'onslaught of abuse', that is a question. You can tell by the question mark at the end.

You may think that but, as I predicted, it is easy to see that you are just trying to avoid noticing that you made the totally wrong inference by quoting factually incorrect material. You have failed to show that anyone is restricted from having a piggy bank on their window ledges.

Are you retarded?

I am legally both.

Many narrow-minded people have expected me to align myself with one or the other as that is the only option they have and therefor can comprehend. To them I say don't even bother - I'm different to 'single nationality' people and that's a fact.

Fortunately I live in Renfrewshire, where on the whole people are a bit more understanding of the significance of an Italian flag flying over a house on the days between the semi-final and the final of the World Cup, and are probably a bit less anally retentive overall.

I posted this detail in jest, but I now feel that I should apologise for the overreaction it provoked.

This is really much too much. We have a rule against 'ad hominem' arguments, as I'm sure you know.

Accordingly I'm placing your account on 'final warning' status. This does not affect your ability to post or participate in any way. However if you continue with the personal attacks the account will be suspended without any further warning.

Excellent post BottyBurp, my sentiments exactly.
This is nothing to do with the factual accuracy of the points being debated,
but the way in which posters address each other and communicate with each other.

A bit like the OSI model in network communications, if the layer 1 is not working correctly, then the data communication between the higher levels will also be affected.

Save your breath, BottyBurp and Ernest. Trying to have a meaningful discussion with these two is like catching dandelion clocks in a gale.

How can you begin to talk sensibly when one of them persisently writes off a group of pre-eminent demographers, statisticians, judges and doctors as a “bunch of loonies” and is reduced to nit-picking over the word “eminent”. Sorry, r11co, that is not a constructive argument.

Express concern about Britain becoming overcrowded and you’re a racist making a personal attack on his father who escaped the Nazis.

Express sympathy for his immigrant grandparents who had a hostile reception in the UK, probably before I was born, and you’re “patronising”.

Say Eddie Izzard is one of the funniest and cleverest comedians on the planet but you don’t like his line in skirts, and you’re a homophobe.

Say the combined readership of the Mail, Express and Telegraph is 10 million and all they do is trash the figure, offering no evidence of course. (It was an educated guess - officially it’s 9,751,000. Watch them pounce!).

Object to seeing your country’s social make-up change irrevocably before your eyes and you get a torrent of abuse.

Stick to the subject and you’re accused of bait-and-switch.

For all their cleverdick answers and smartarse put-downs, they appear blind to the fact that three-quarters of the population now believe this country is becoming overcrowded and that tighter limits should be placed on immigration.

Is that chips and shoulders I see before me?

FJSrider has also confirmed the First Law of Posting on these forums: The bigger the picture, the smaller the brain.

The subject is not out of place here as overcrowding of our little island is certainly a matter of concern to SafeSpeed. I’ve tried to be polite and patient with these two but it doesn’t work. Sorry Paul, strike me off now. It had to be said.

What irks me is that you see nothing wrong in repeating propositions that I find directly offensive. Moreover you fail to grasp why I find them offensive - if this were another time then the person you would be deriding with your attitude would be me.

If your current attitude actually held sway through history then I and many other forum posters (including the Swiss!) would probably not be posting here. Maybe that would suit you, but then again maybe if you traced your own genealogy back a few centuries you might find cause to keep your trap shut with regards migration.

You still choose to ignore that it happens (1066 and all that), always has and always will, and King Canute style posturing never makes a difference. Perhaps one day you can get into power on a platform of ethnic cleansing and you can return the country to a stage where only your definition of an 'indiginous population' remain.
