Noticed this in the Current Bun yesterday.



So slowing people down is going to make them better drivers?

And still we hear the same old claptrap about too fast equalling breaking the speed limit. Confusing the two in people's minds is incredibly dangerous, no question about it.

Perhaps minister of Transport ( recently transported in from Gallifrae,(in an old police box) (spelling)) has reset time some 23 years. ( or wishes to do so )

Some variation on this story seems to get made up about every year or so. It is always 'being developed'.

Unfortunately driver training also seems to be in the same state - further training ideas are "being developed" ,but no one is brave enough to come forward and put them into practice.

Aparently this new "super duper sensor sytem " can sense chlids coming out of houses, and slam on the brakes , causing those behind to either emergency brake or tale end you. Nice safety system - aint it. Saves the kids, on the street - whiplashes the kids in cars.

Compare that to the human system .....................which stops both, by driving sensibily.

A spokesman said: “The idea is that vehicles exist to protect people.”

And there was silly me thinking my car was there to get me to work in the morning.

BTW Leeds University had a GPS equipped Escort doing the rounds on TV a good 5 years ago and the new Lexus featured on Fifth Gear recently seemed pretty much capable of driving itself.

So you'll be driving along a main road at, say, 60 when all of a sudden the software tells the car in front to slow down for no observable reason. In your older car no such warning will happen. Recipe for a tail-ender!Will this be thought through? One might suppose that it will be easy to re-programme the on-board systems to over-ride this nonsense.

And the kids will realise that they can slow down cars and 'tease' them. Then along comes a car that isn't so equipped...

I know how to make self driving cars that are safe but the technology is decades away. The key is that (once the vision systems are up to the job) the control systems have to gain the driving experience of experts in a learning system. Once it's got 10 million miles of expert driving you can start cloning it and rolling it out.

But the thing is that technical breakdown will probably be at least as frequent as crashes caused by human driver error...
