AN ANGRY motorist who cut down a speed camera after he thought he had been flashed has been jailed for two months.

Richard Atkinson, 31, of Derbyshire, feared he would get a fine and three penalty points he returned with a stepladder and sawed the camera down in January.

He then fled the scene on the A610 in Nuthall, Norttinghamshire, then drove home with the camera in the back of his car.

He was caught after eye-witnesses took down his registration number and contacted police, who traced him to his home address - where he had stashed the camera in the garden.

He was jailed after admitting a charge of perverting the course of justice at Nottingham Crown Court.

A police spokesman said Atkinson had caused £8,000 worth of damage. He was also mistaken in thinking he had been flashed by the camera.

Chief Inspector Andrew Charlton, of Nottinghamshire Police, added: “Atkinson’s actions were irresponsible and extreme to say the least.

“His behaviour could potentially have led to an accident on that stretch of road.

"Road safety cameras are positioned in areas where there have been a number of collisions, their purpose being to keep down the number of motorists and pedestrians killed or injured.”

Has anybody noticed that 9 times out of 10, the burglar/mugger/robber, etc gets a community sentence after doing something that really impacts the future of the victims life......yet you so much as dare to think about causing a bit of criminal damage (because thats what the offence REALLY was) to any STATE camera and you are going to jail no matter what?

What is even more incredulous is that we are letting sex cases out because we don't have the space to start with, yet we can miraculously finds the space for someone who upsets the man

Indeed I read an article which asked "what will it take before they lock up Pete Doherty", singer of Babyshambles? This parasite has been provided with numerous chances with respect to multiple convictions.

If you refuse to pay your council tax however, it's stright to jail; the judicial system is puzzling to say the least.

It is not surprising when you realise that the first purpose of the law is to maintain the power and privileges of the ruling elite. Protecting the public comes a very poor second to that. So anything that ruffles the feathers of the state or threatens its authority must be stamped on hard.
