Personally I think this claim is debatable, you would think that these vehicles being heavier and higher that worse injuries would be sustained in the event of conflict; either with another smaller vehicle or ped/cyclist.
I would say that it would be worse for a small child to be hit by a 4X4 as they have more chance of going under the wheels although if I had my choice of going under the
middle of a car or a 4X4 I think I know what I would choose-it's swings and roundabouts again, your less likely to go under a car but worse if you did as the car is lower to the ground etc and vice versa with 4X4's.
As the front of a 4X4 is more flat then if an average adult is hit the energy is more likely to be dissipated over a wider area of the body meaning-more-less severe injuries rather than the injuries sustained by being flipped and smashed against the screen and roof of a low slung car. The 4X4 is more likely to catapult you forward rather than throwing you over it-again it is a trade off more than anything.
But many just assume that it WILL be worse being hit by a 4X4.
