Stop driving like lunatics
Oct 19 2005
By Gary Porter, Ellesmere Port Pioneer

ELLESMERE Port MP Andrew Miller has a message for speeding yobs making residents' lives a misery on Thornton Road - it's not cool to drive like a lunatic.

Mr Miller blasted the joyriders for putting people's lives at risk after joining the Pioneer in backing a residents' campaign to drive out boy racers.

He is determined to put an end to the damage and is pushing for road safety measures to be implemented.

Story continues

Mr Miller says he sympathises with the residents' ordeal and under-stands the heartache caused by speeding drivers through being chairman of the Parliamentary Group for Justice for Road Traffic Victims.

He said: 'These drivers should be ashamed of themselves. It is essential that we put an end to their stupidity. It's not cool to drive like a lunatic and it certainly won't be a thrill if they get killed.' As a short-term deterrent, Mr Miller wants to see mobile speed cameras employed on Thornton Road until long-term safety measures can be put in place.

He said: 'There is a significant number of residents who want traffic-calming measures in place and I will be liaising with police and the county council to make that happen.

'It's unfortunate that it has to come to this because of a minority who take it upon themselves to drive at ridiculous speeds.'

Homeowners on Thornton Road say they are at breaking point and want action to be taken.

They have compiled a petition as well as taking a series of pictures which show the damage caused by a string of speed-related incidents.

I would suspect these so called joy riders are using stolen cars, and in such a case would not be detected by the use of speed cameras. The fact is there are no police patrols around this area to catch these kinds of drivers.

So now every normal driver is going to suffer for the sake of a few.
