What exactly is the benefit of the proposed car-sharing lane? Taking an already congested road and forcing 87% of the traffin into 67% of the lanes.

More traffic restricted to two lanes increases potential for accidents. Increased frustration when LGVs overtake increases potential for accidents.

And how exactly are the car sharers going to get into the 3rd lane ? Driver's attitude being wat it is, they will not exactly be helped to cross two lanes of near satationary traffic.

What happens when traffic is relatively light ? Car sharer in lane 3 at 65 mph slowing everyone down ?

Yet another inappropriate idea being intrtrduced with little thought.

I saw Mr Darling yabbering on about this today.

They are putting an extra lane in between J26 and J27 on the M62 which is the most congested part of a very congested road. The new lane will be for "cars with more than two people" (Mr Darlings words). Not sure if they are putting in a real extra lane or using the hard shoulder since they are only spending 2.5million on it. Most of it was recently widened to extend the sliproads at either end, the rest is in cuttings with bridges over or on an embankment which will make widening difficult.

Of course this will be a huge success and you can expect to see them rolled out accross the country. The difference being that they won't bother with the "putting in a new lane" part.

Plus, if this lane is the outside lane, will it be permisible to undertake?

Are motorcycles exempt? I can see some serious backlash from the BMF/MAG if they aren't.

Well, digging around it seems like Mr Darling doesn't know what he is talking about.

The lane will be for cars and light goods vehicles with two or more people on board.

It seems like it is the long promised and badly needed link road.

It's rather at odds with this plan for a HOV lane in a currently non existant L4 between J24 and 27.

Extra policing is promised, though it will take a lot of police effort to check every car on a 1 mile bit of road. I can see a lot of people being pulled in for no reason. And if it is enforced by camera, how can a camera see all seats in a car are empty? The above report acknowledged they had to monitor roads from two angles to spot front and rear seat passengers. With window tints it would be impossible to say if back seats are empty or not.

I know this has been said before but ...

HOV lanes do not work when they are implemented correctly. We will do our usual half-a$$ed attempt at copying a bad idea and it will be a disaster.

If there are fines AND points for miss-use are the Police going to use them when they are not answering an emergency

Can the second occupant be a very small person occupying a baby seat? If so HTH are the cameras going to tell the difference between driver only and driver + squealing ankle biter? And if they can't it seems easy enough to say "kids in back - prove otherwise - stuff off" when the fine comes through the post.

What legislation will they use to prosecute?

Do they define what is meant by a passenger?

A growing number of estate cars and SUVs now have privacy glass!

The only way this can be enforced is by real police. That'll be the day!

I like the way it gets reported. They say that people won't share a vehicle. You would either have to be very rich or the passenger would need some pretty awfull personal habits for you not to share a vehicle if you are undertaking the same journey.

What those muppets forget is we are all going about our own business and all have different places to go.

1. I am - as far as I know - the only person in my village that drives to the area that I work. Often I go to/back from somewhere entirely different.

2. Being a company vehicle it is not insured to carry non-employees.

3. This idea has originated from the desks of civil servants, who no doubt turn up at exactly the same time every day, and leave on the dot (otherwise they'd get signed off for six months with "stress"). They're probably blissfully unaware that the rest of us don't.

That's car sharing out for me.

It will be great for my 7 seater since we usually have at least two of us on board. In a way I will be getting rewarded for having 5 empty seats while the van driver doing his job, keeping the country running, with one empty seat will be punished. That's justice for you.
