I saw this on the Wessex Way (heding towards Bournemouth), their traffic information board said:



Well it's good to think about braking distance. Especially as the pointless limit incourages tailgating

Actually, concidering the behaviour of one officer last weekend, this may be a notice intended to be read by the police.

I recall a VAS sited on the Aylsebury side of Wendover way back in the late 70s that flashed up "FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY" if you were, er, following the vehicle ahead too closely (surprisingly).
Whatever became of it/those I wonder?

I really can't see a lot of good in this. What will the average motorist understand it to mean? I'm guessing that most would briefly think of the chart on the back of the Highway Code... Or perhaps the more aware would mumble 70mph, 315 feet.

How many would try and put braking distance in a driving context? (e.g. Can I stop before the next lamp post if I need to?)

Or perhaps it's the first faltering step on the road back to true enlightenment?

There is a speed camera the other side of the road just behind where that photo is taken from. Most people would be continuing on to the dual carageway part of the Wessex Way and if you're going all the way to Ringwood you'll have 3 (or is it 4?) fixed gatsos to negotiate plus one mobile site, and the road has a 50mph limit on it for no apparent reason. So lots of too close driving.

But I suppose it is a better message than "50 = safe, 51 = you murder children"

I've noticed simular on motorway information signs too.

Great way to encourage drivers to pay less attention too them, although the only other thing I've noticed them do is display "slow down- congestion ahead" when you're doing 3mph in stop start traffic.
